Though Pidgin English is fast becoming more and more important as a language but notwithstanding, English remain the only official language of communication in Nigeria. It is not an over statement if we say that most of the students cannot make simple, clear and error-free sentences in English language. This has been attributed to the frequent use of pidgin by students either by way of code switching or code mixing in communication at home, school and their neighbourhood. It is becoming increasingly difficult if a particular student really went to school or perhaps was well schooled in the rudiments of English. Language origin is inconsequential though, it is one of the major distinguishing factors of man from animal because it forms the basis for communication which essentially is a human characteristic. This focuses mainly on the biological basis on the formation and development of human language. It does seem reasonable that physical gesture, involving the whole body, could have been a means of indicating a wide range of emotional states and intentions.Ī quite different level of speculation on the origins of human speech comes under the general heading of gloss genetics. Also, one suggestion regarding the origin of the sounds of language involves a link between physical gesture and orally produced sounds. When an object flew by, making a CAWCAW sound, the early humans imitated the sound and used it to refer to the object associated with the sound. The suggestion is that primitive words could have been imitations of the natural sound which early men and women heard around them. The natural sound was also seen as the concept of “natural sounds”. In an attempt to rediscover this original divine language, a few experiments have been carried out, with rather conflicting results. This is to say that in pidgin, there are no strict rules given in utterances.Īlternatively, following a Hindu tradition, language came from the goddess Sarasvati, wife of Brahma, creator of the universe. Pidgins are mostly inventionist and innovative in nature and because of their spontaneous adaptability, they can be as structured or as unstructured as needed unlike other languages. In Africa, pidgins found include Nigerian pidgin, Cameroonian pidgin, Serria Leone Krio etc. In this instance a foreign language (English) left its native environment and met with another language or languages (Nigerian indigenous languages). It is a second language because Nigerians already had their first language or Mother Tongue (L1) before the incursion of this foreign language called ‘English’ into the country. In addition, the use of Nigerian Pidgin by students during official communication should not be encouraged by the school management and lecturers.Įnglish language in Nigeria is a second language. It was recommended that Staff and students in tertiary institution across the federation should engage the use of Standard English language in the communication rather than use of Nigeria Pidgin. From the analyzed data, it showed that students frequently use Pidgin in their daily communication within the school premises, lack of effective usage of English language has prompted student to use Pidgin in their communication and the use of Nigeria pidgin by male and female students has encourage wrong use and expression of English language. Five research questions were formulated to guide the study, from which the questionnaire was designed.
